The
Municipal of San Marcos la Laguna is 170 kilometers
from the capital and 48 kilometers from Sololá.
Travel is conducted in one of two ways, by road or by
boat.
Traveling from the capital
or Antigua you can take either a shuttle service (2
hours) or a chicken bus (3 hours) to Panajachel. Most
all major tourist towns have a regular bus to Panajachel.
The way most people from
San Marcos la Laguna travel, is along the skirts of
Lake Atitlán by boat. It is about 10.5 kilometers
from San Marcos to the docks of Panajachel. During your
trip across the lake, you will encounter the villages
of Santa Cruz la Laguna, Jaibalito and Tzununá.
Normally the trip takes about 45 minutes, and leaves
every half hour from 6:00 in the morning to 7:30 at
night. Traveling in the other direction you will encounter
the villages of San Pablo, San Juan and San Pedro La
Laguna. The last boat leaving from this direction is
at 5:00 in the evening. |
